Overweight but otherwise healthy people who intentionally lose weight can reduce their risk of diabetes by almost one third, a large study by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) researchers suggests.

Data from the Cancer Prevention Study I, a prospective study of more than 200,000 overweight subjects, showed that intentional weight loss was associated with a 21% reduction in diabetes risk among men and a 28% reduction among women. “The men who lost weight intentionally had lower rates of diabetes, and the more they lost, the lower the rate of diabetes. For every 20 pounds or 9 kilograms that they lost, they reduced the rate of diabetes by 11%,” reported CDC researcher Julie Will. “The same was true of women, even more so. For every 20 pounds or 9 kilograms that they lost, there was a 17% fall in the rate of diabetes,” she continued. “Intentional weight loss is associated with a decreased rate of diabetes, and the greater the weight loss, the greater the protective effect.”
